laissez-faire as the policy most conducive to economic equality and political liberty. His official messages, though delivered to Congress, spoke in plain and powerful language to the people at large. The famous image of Jackson having one of the best hair days in American history was engraved on the 20 bill. Some praise his strength and audacity; others see him as vengeful and self-obsessed. To the supporters of Jackson a son of the frontier, the first common man to get so close to the White House this was an outrage against democracy. He indulged in violent hatreds, and the extent to which his political positions reflected mere personal animus is still debated. Nothing special was owed to Jackson in the matter. Oddly, Jacksons reputation was the victim of his success. Andrew Jackson left a permanent imprint upon American politics and the presidency. The Democratic party was Jackson's child; the national two-party system was his legacy.

If recent generations have forgotten Jackson contributions to the things we like about America, they have remembered too well his participation in the things we dont like. Cheap: Good lineup for saving this week. He was a tough sell amid the civil rights revolution of the 1960s, when his unrepentant ownership of slaves marked him as one to be censured rather than praised. He has undoubtedly had the greatest influence on Americas presidential policies and governmental activities. The Hermitage, his plantation in Nashville, has breathed new life into the debate. Jacksons fame faded for another reason. His power and authority served as an example for all presidents who followed in his footsteps.
